Traditional designs predominate this award-winning collection, but the Jaimak Collection combines the benefits of contemporary color and durable New Zealand wool for rug styling that adds sophistication to any environment. "A Sumak, Soumack or Sumack Rug" has an interesting texture that is not usually found in flat woven rugs. Weaving a sumak rug is a little different than creating another woven rug. The vertical threads of the rug, usually called warp threads, are wrapped around the horizontal threads (the weft), instead of just being woven through them. This technique results in a textured weave similar to a chain stitch. Sumak carpets have a more interesting texture than traditionally woven rugs. While the distinctive weaving pattern did not originate with the sumak rugs, it reached its most popular incarnation with these rugs. Some caucasian rugs predated fine beautiful sumak rug, and many of the patterns woven into sumak today are adapted from earlier Caucasian rug patterns.
